filmit is a closed community video sharing website for primary school children.

Its focus is on:

  • Expression – using new forms of literacy
  • Communication – film language and media studies
  • Conversation – sharing and commenting
  • Documentation – developing a growing archive

filmit was launched in 10 schools in 2006 with an emphasis on the children themselves making and sharing films from the very start. filmit is now in 87 schools and there are nearly 800 children’s videos on the Open Futures website, demonstrating an extraordinary diversity of approach and style.

filmit is enabling rather than prescriptive and is based on the principle of learning by doing. All children are encouraged to have a go at making films and sharing them online, however simple their approach.

Although filmit started as a way to document ongoing project work in growit and cookit, it quickly spread into other subjects including drama, history, science and art. It promotes collaboration, planning, visual literacy, ICT skills, performance skills, creativity, editing, media studies skills and reflection and evaluation.
